Christopher Cutter, Ph.D.

The Pointe Malibu Recovery Center maintains an academic affiliation with Yale.

Dr. Cutter joins as a ladder-track Associate Professor at the Yale Child Study Center/ Yale School of Medicine, and Founder of the Yale Native American Mental Health Program. At The Pointe, he applies this expertise within an adult treatment setting, supporting care for trauma, substance use, and co-occurring chronic pain.

He is a licensed counseling psychologist whose clinical and research work focuses on three primary areas: adolescent dual diagnosis treatment, addiction medicine—specifically opioid dependence with co-occurring chronic pain—and Native American mental health.

Dr. Cutter began his professional clinical and research training at McLean Hospital/  Harvard Medical School, completing both his practicum and predoctoral internship. He then completed his postdoctoral fellowship in addiction medicine at Yale School of Medicine, where he was quickly invited to join the faculty. Over his 19-year tenure at Yale, Dr. Cutter has held numerous clinical and research leadership roles, received multiple academic and teaching awards, and is recognized as a national and international expert in his areas of specialization.

In addition to his faculty roles, Dr. Cutter served as Assistant Dean of Yale College and as Director of Yale’s Native American Cultural Center. During this time, he helped influence the development of a dedicated Native American Mental Health Program, expanding access to culturally responsive services and strengthening training for Native and medical students serving diverse and rural communities.

Dr. Cutter has also developed several adolescent residential treatment programs and continues to serve as Chief of Psychology for a Yale-affiliated adolescent residential program, where he oversees clinical programming, staff training, and supervision. At The Pointe, his work supports clinical excellence through research-informed assessment, program consultation, and ongoing staff development.
